(Also at 9 a.m.) Reviewed by Janet Mastin New York Times News Service There are celebrated authors, and then there are authors who happen to be celebrities.

The difference between them has as much to do with surprise value as with literary heft. When a famous person writes a memoir, he or she hits the interview circuit, and the most dramatic or scandalous beans have been spilled long before the book reaches your hands. National television audiences have already been treated to the author's best anecdotes. So why read these things at all? One reason is the winning qualities that made this person popular in the first place, since a book can be a handy showcase for charm. Another is voyeurism, the kind that may be satisfied by knowing that Michael J.

Fox once lived so emphatically in the fast lane that he might decide which of his cars to drive on the basis of "upholstery that best matched whatever shirt I happened to throw on." Or that Rosie O'Donnell loves her home in Miami and regards herself as "a fun but strict mom." "I am a sucker," she writes. "It's not compassion, it's codependent compulsion." As to her close identification with Stacie, she links this to hardships suffered during her own painful childhood. Her mother died of breast cancer when O'Donnell was in elementary school, prompting her to write: "It's like I'm somehow stuck. Mom, Mom. You could just call out forever." In light of other, darker, unnamed events in her past, she speculates: "Maybe it's also an abuse thing.

When your boundaries have been violated, you just plain and simple stop seeing the space between people, so people's pain becomes your pain and you have to stop it At another point, still obsessively returning to thoughts about Stacie and their e-mail correspondence, she acknowledges, "Looking back, my signing 'love' to a person I did not know seems sort of sad." Price of fame There is indeed a sadness to "Find Me," and much of it manifests itself as dissatisfaction. O'Donnell describes her reasons for deciding to give up her talk show, and often points out the price of fame. hair, the makeup, the glitz, the glamour, it is pretend, empty. It is not as it Credible as this is, it fortunately is part of a book that reflects O'Donnell's frank, no-nonsense humor. She often mentions dreams that revolve around Angelina Tolle, like one in which that actress sells apples while raisins fall from open windows.

And she describes asking her therapist why that star looms large in her fantasy life. "She said, 'My guess would be, Angelina Jolie." writes O'Donnell, whose romantic preference for women is simply a given as she tells her life's story. "Then she charged me $300. Whatever." 1 0, news side of the doctor's desk, I sat listening quietly, nodding impassively as if this man were my agent, telling me my last film had tanked. I wish." The 1991 diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, of the young-onset variety (he was barely 30), is of course a high-profile part of his story.

Or should have been: two years later, he made a list of the most important aspects of his life, and he now looks back in astonishment to see that the illness went unmentioned. His efforts to hide his condition from himself as well as others, along with his ultimate ability to use his situation to help others, give an aspect of genuine drama to this engagingly told story. Jargon, self-knowledge Jargon and psychotherapeutically attained self-knowledge figure in "Lucky Man," and they loom even larger in O'Donnell's "Find Me." (The title is a twist on her staffs "Find You" list, naming those with automatic access to their boss.) I In a book that is much briefer than Fox's despite similar page counts, she jumps from stories about her childhood and motherhood to and from the main event: her intense long-distance friendship with an unwed teen-age mother-to-be. Her name is Stacie, and in fairness to anyone for whom this cat is not fully out of the bag, let's just say that her story gives O'Donnell occasion to re-examine her urge to be overwhelmingly helpful to others. And perhaps to revisit "The Three Faces of Eve." vate wedding, he and his wife were pursued by The National Enquirer, which wanted access and "offered us 'what we gave Burt and Loni," namely a cover photograph and fawning article) and arrives at something bigger.

7- He offers the thought that having Parkinson's disease has actually improved his life. Then he makes a case to back it up. Sounding smart, funny and ghostwriter-free, Fox describes his giddy rise to the kind of television stardom that landed him in publications as diverse as Family Circle, Mad, Playgirl, Variety and Bop. (Headline from the last one: "Who's Cuter, Kirk Cameron or Michael J. You Decider) Intoxicating success That this success was quite literally intoxicating is attested to by the influence of Alcoholics Anonymous later in his story.

And that it had gone to his head in other ways is apparent in a mortifying anecdote about the funeral of his father, a Canadian military man who liked to say, "If the army wanted me to have a family, they would have issued me one." When his siblings worried about not having saved a copy of their father's obituary, Fox, the star of "Family Ties" and the "Back to the Future" movies, reassured them in high-flying fashion. "Don't worry about I said. 'I'm sure my clipping service will pick it up." Fox might well have written a solid book even if fate had not dealt him the worst kind of bestseller material. "There, on the bad 'Radio HighlightsWednesday Something to say But the most worthwhile selling point for such high-profile memoirs is something else. It's the fact that sometimes, despite the odds and the ego-trip format, the stellar author may actually have something important to say.
