What Time Does ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ Premiere on Netflix?
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder stars a familiar face to Netflix fans, even if she may not sound familiar. Wednesday and Family Switch star Emma Myers plays Pippa “Pip” Fitz-Amobi, a sweet and studious teenager trying to solve a murder in her cozy English town, Little Kilton. That’s right: Emma Myers plays a Brit. In fact, the 22-year-old actress is so convincing as demure English rose, you might be wondering if she is in fact one of those omnipresent British actors trained at drama school to perfectly nail American accents.
In truth, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is the rare BBC production that stars an actor born and raised in Orlando, Florida. Myers is 100% all-American, and yet, she’s able to perfectly nail not just a regional English accent, but the vibe of someone from a hamlet called Little Kilton.
Wednesday made Emma Myers an overnight star, Family Switch proved she could hold her own onscreen with famous faces like Jennifer Garner, but A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder springboards the actress into a new tier. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder not only proves Emma Myers can lead a series all on her own, but she’s got the range to deliver layers, nuanced, even technically tricky performances.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is Emma Myers’s time to shine.
Based on the bestselling YA novel of the same name, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder follows titular “good girl” Pip as she tries to clear the name of Sal Singh (Rahul Patti). For five years, everyone in Little Kilton has assumed that Sal murdered his pretty, popular, blonde girlfriend Andie Bell (India Lillie Davis). While Andie’s body was never recovered, Sal supposedly confessed to the crime before dying by suicide. Pip doesn’t buy it, though. She remembers Sal as a kind-hearted teenager. For some reason, Pip is so convinced something doesn’t add up about the Andie Bell case that she tries to solve the real crime for her “EPQ,” aka long-term school project.
As you might expect, Pip is right. Everything about the Andie Bell case does not add up. With the help of Sal’s hot brother Ravi (Zain Iqbal), Pip begins poking into the various lies, buried secrets, and shocking evils that have been covered up by her community. As A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder heats up, Pip not only finds herself breaking big rules for the first time, but also questioning if she, herself, is a good person.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is charming because it melds the classic cozy British murder mystery with modern aesthetics. Social media is used to help nail down timelines, smartphone trackers are used to nab killers, and, of course, the show stars Gen Z actors. The initial set up —a teenaged boy of South Asian descent framed as a “beast” who murdered his girlfriend — also evokes the Hae Min Lee/Adnan Syed case covered by Serial, aka the most popular true crime murder podcast in the last decade. But keeping all these elements fused together is the elegant performance of Emma Myers.
As Pip, Myers is simultaneously wise beyond her years and adorably naive. She’s got the plucky, booksmart, doe-eyed energy of a young Rory Gilmore and the stubborn determination of your favorite sleuths. Pip can just as easily smooth talk her way through complex intellectual arguments as she can totally whiff normal banter with other teenagers. She’s thinks deeply about the nature of justice and also can’t help but (obviously) feel butterflies when she realizes she’s alone in a hotel room with Ravi.
Emma Myers has been utterly charming before. She’s shown off nascent star power. In A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, however, she shows that she’s got the range to go the distance in Hollywood.
Emma Myers is way more than just Enid on Wednesday. She’s Pip on A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and a rising star with all the potential in the world.
